I'm currently working on my solo debut album featuring premiere recordings of contemporary classical works by legendary 10-time GRAMMY-nominated jazz pianist and recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Composition Fred Hersch. Fred is widely known for his monumental work as a pianist, composer, improviser, bandleader, and educator in the world of jazz. But he's also written contemporary "classical" works which pay homage to Hersch's other influences- of classical composers from Bach to Scriabin to Debussy (and more!) to rhythms and sounds of Brazilian folk music and the Argentinian tango.
The highlight is "Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky" in which Fred takes the famous oboe theme from Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony and weaves masterful variations in styles from baroque to classical to ragtime to tango, and more. This album serves to cement the legacy of works written by one of today's greatest composers.
Fred Hersch is an incredible artist and human being. I'm incredibly lucky to have this opportunity. You can read about his tremendous musical feats and inspirational life story as a long-term HIV/AIDS survivor in this wonderful New York Times feature here.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the indiegogo campaign to support this project.
